Director Tyson Sterne
A graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck High School, Tyson Sterne is a Puget Sound native passionate about creating quality musical experiences. Tyson received his bachelors from University of Washington, where he studied trumpet with Roy Cummings and Allen Vizzutti and conducting from Tim Salzman. His master's degree is from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he studied jazz with Don Owens and conducting with Mallory Thompson.
Tyson started teaching music in 2001 at Mercer Middle School in Seattle Public Schools, then moved to Chicago and taught at Steinmetz Academic Centre in Chicago Public Schools. After spending several years at Fort Vancouver High School in Vancouver Public Schools, Tyson took some time off of teaching to pursue some opportunities in the military, but returned to Seattle in 2015 and started teaching part time again at TOPS K-8.
Tyson joined the Oregon National Guard 234th Army Band in December of 2006 as a traditional "one weekend a month" guard Soldier. In 2011 he competed in a "Soldier of the Year" Competition and while he didn't win the competition, he did keep up with the infantry Soldiers and the Oregon National Guard was impressed enough that they offered him a full time active duty position with the 234th Army Band. Tyson became a supply, admin, and readiness sergeant for the 234th Army Band and also served as an MPT (Musical Performance Team) leader for "Brass Ops," the 234th's New Orleans style brass band.
Tyson's music performing career as a trumpet player includes Latin dance bands, funk, New Orleans and British Style brass bands, concert bands, and symphony orchestras. Some of the community groups he has played with are Brass Band Northwest, Southwest Washington Wind Symphony, Pacific Crest Wind Symphony, Vancouver Pops Orchestra, Prairie Brass Band, Palatine Concert Band, and Puget Brass Band.
Eventually, the desire to return home to the Puget Sound Region and to teaching became strong enough that Tyson transferred to the reserves and moved home to Seattle with his family. In 2018, he became one of the the Army's newest reserve warrant officers through the physically and mentally rigorous Warrant Officer Candidate School, and teaches band and orchestra full time at McClure Middle School in Queen Anne.
Tyson's family includes his wife Tina, who also teaches music in Seattle Public Schools, his 10 year old son Sam and 6 year old daughter Noelle.
