Director Michael Alstad

From the time he started playing the trumpet under the tutelage of Wayne Timmerman more than forty years ago, Michael Alstad has been actively involved in band performance. His most recent endeavor is with the Around the Sound Community Band, accepting the appointment as Director in May 2008. The primary focus of his work over the past fifteen years is with community music organizations. In addition to his work with Around the Sound Community Band, Michael is the Executive Director of Music Center of the Northwest.

Prior to returning to the Pacific Northwest, Michael spent thirteen years in the Province of Saskatchewan where he served as Director of the North Battleford City Kinsmen Band, Battlefords Concert Band, and the Regina Lions Band. He was also the leader of the Battlefords Jazz Band and a member of the Saskatoon and Regina Jazz Society Big Bands. While in Saskatchewan he created the Music Workshop, a program that focuses on motivation and personal development to help bands expand basic skills into award-winning performances.

Michael has a record of accomplishment that serves as a testament to his leadership. As Director of the Regina Lions Bands, his groups produced award-winning performances at the World Association of Marching Show Band Championships, the Mid American Competing Band Directors Association and the Calgary Stampede. Recognition as 'Most Outstanding' has been a constant in local and regional festivals. He has also served as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in the United States, Canada and Japan.

A native of the state of Washington, Michael has both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Music Education from Eastern Washington University.
